Food Names as People Names

People are fascinated by names, and this is attested to by the plethora of sources available, featuring many different kinds of lists of both given and surnames. These websites and books can be fairly bland; merely providing alphabetical lists of as many names as possible as they vie to claim having the most "baby names." But these sites and sometimes separate sites will also contain lists breaking names down by categories: most popular, nationality, celebrities, sports figures, musicians, literary giants or inspired names, geographic location, animals, plants, meaning, etc. There are even pet name lists! But being unable to find a list of names that are also the names of foods, beverages, and the like, I decided to create a list of the given and surname "Food Names" bequethed or inflicted (as the case may be) by parents to their children. This collection includes monikers in English and as many non-English languages as possible. In some cases, they are names that were translated from other languages into English to make their meaning more understandable, or as a result of phonetic spellings. Some culinary dishes have been named after famous people and famous names have been linked to some culinary dishes, and these have also been included here.

The reference list of books and websites, consulted for creating the following list, can be found listed at the very end of this website. No direct citation information is provided as I mixed and matched and combined the information from all the sources in almost every entry. Providing direct citation information would have been virtually impossible and cumbersome to the site. No plagiarism is intended with this work, and for further or more complete information it is recommended that the user go directly to the sources. In addition, some of the names were provided or further clarified by individuls who enjoyed this project as much as I and so wanted to help, or were approached to confirm information I read. Many thanks to those who have contributed!!!

I hope you have as much fun perusing the list as I did in compiling it. There are some very surprising names on the list; names that will make you say "What?!" when you discover a name you would not have expected, or that someone liked so much they named their child after it. So fill your glass with your favorite beverage, and get a plateful of your favorite food and enjoy; who knows, you may even find what you are eating in the list.

The first line (sometimes two) of each cell is the name and the nationality (these are color-coded). The remaining lines within the cell contain the meaning or origin of the name. Some of the names are the names of the foods we grow or raise, such as Strawberry or Lamb, while others are dishes or beverages that are made by mixing, cooking, or baking such as Napoleon or Shirley Temple.

Current number of names in the list: 571
